Aegina is the largest
of the Saronic Islands, offering not only perfect tranquillity but
one of the classic views over the Saronic Gulf from the Temple of
Aphaia, perched on the hill high above Aghia Marina. In 1828 Aegina
was the capital of Greece, and because of its importance was the
first place in Europe to develop a banking system and to mint coins.
The first of the Greek newspapers were also created on the island. |
